about 54siblings

a home for black art and the people making it.

54siblings is a nonprofit community of artists and creatives across Africa and the Americas, built by the past and present fellows, faculty, and friends of the MMAADD Institute.

We bring artists together and provide the digital tools, fellowships, resources, and relationships that help amplify their creativity, extend their reach, and grow sustainable practices.

Because Black artists deserve more than a moment of visibility. They deserve enduring ways to make, connect, be discovered, earn from their work, and build creative lives on their own terms.

54siblings is a program of The Birthright Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

why 54

the talent is everywhere. the pathways are not.

Across Africa and the Americas, Black artists are making work that carries memory, shapes culture, and imagines what comes next. Yet access to tools, audiences, markets, commissions, and creative support remains uneven.

54siblings builds those connections. We help artists strengthen their practice, share their work, reach new audiences, and turn creativity into lasting cultural and economic value.

This is more than a place to display art. It is shared infrastructure for Black creativity to live, travel, and grow.

what we do

community, opportunity, and practical support.

the collective

A living network of artists and creatives across Africa and the Americas. Members find peers, collaborators, audiences, commissions, and opportunities to grow. The collective gives artists a shared home while helping each creative practice remain distinct.

two fellowships, distinct roles

The 54siblings Operator Fellowship trains emerging cultural operators to run this platform. The MMAADD Artist Fellowship is a separate artist-facing paid residency offered by the MMAADD Institute. Both belong to a wider creative community, but serve different people and have different application paths.

the commissions desk

A direct path from people looking for original creative talent to artists ready to make the work. The desk helps brands, publications, nonprofits, institutions, and private collectors discover and commission artists from the collective. We help shape the brief, make the match, and support the project through delivery.

built as a collective

no artist should have to build alone.

54siblings grew from the community around the MMAADD Institute — fellows learning together, faculty sharing what they know, alumni opening doors, and friends helping good work travel further.

Artists bring the work. Mentors strengthen the practice. Collectors help the work endure. Commissioners create new opportunities. Supporters give fellows the tools and room to keep creating.

Everyone has a part in moving the work forward.

how value moves

from black creativity back to black creative lives.

54siblings is built to create more than exposure. It creates practical pathways for artists to make, earn, connect, and grow.

  • —Tools — technology and creative resources that make more ambitious work possible.
  • —artist support — focused time, guidance, and support to develop the artist and the practice.
  • —Visibility — enduring platforms through which artists and their work can be discovered.
  • —Sales — direct access to collectors through gallerëtteno.54.
  • —Commissions — paid opportunities from clients seeking original creative talent.
  • —Community — relationships with artists, collaborators, mentors, and supporters across continents.

When one artist reaches further, the whole community sees what is possible.

the people behind 54

built across cities, disciplines, and generations.

54siblings is stewarded by a distributed team across Africa and the Americas. We build the platform, support fellows, welcome artists, curate the work, cultivate partnerships, and keep the community moving.

A public health professional finishing her MPH in mental health and health promotion, Mo is also the founder of ArtbyMo, using art and public storytelling to open up conversations on mental health and substance use across Nigeria. She came up through mmaadd and now runs the daily rhythm of 54siblings — the calls, the follow-ups, the small coordination that keeps a distributed team and a growing roster of fellows moving together.
